Background of MAK
Two individuals, viz. Mr. Nahendra Padun, a research student at the University of Gauhati and Mr. Tabu Ram Taid, a lecturer in English at C otton C ollege, Guwahati, met at the latter’s residence sometime in the early part of 1968 and decided to establish an association of the Mising people living in the city of Guwahati. Accordingly, they convened a general meeting of the Misings in Guwahati, not many in number at the time and an association, named GUWAHATI MISING KÉBANG (Mising Association, Guwahati), was launched formally on that day, with Mr. Taid as President and Mr. Padun as Secretary of the association. Among other things, this association addressed itself to the idea of developing a scientific writing system for the Mising language, and started dealing especially with the question of adoption of a suitable script for the Mising language, as it did not have a script of its own. The two individuals, named above, considered carrying on the efforts of the GUWAHATI MISING KÉBANG at the level of the Mising community as a whole, and, to that end, organized an open meeting at Disangmukh, district Sivasagar, Assam, on April 17 & 18, 1972. After lengthy deliberations, a resolution was adopted in the meeting on April 18, 1972 to set up an organization,
named MISING AGOM KÉBANG (MAK), with Mr Tabu Ram Taid as its first President and Mr Nahendra Padun as its first Secretary.
